Lieberman running as an independent causes as many problems for the GOP as for the dems, cuz Joe can't beat Lamont without crossover republicans and other undecideds, but if republicans support Joe they alienate their own party and make Joe an easy target(as if he's not already) for Dems. The GOP can't support Joe if they have their own candidate in the race, and what self-respecting candidate would run a sham campaign and then take a fall to help Joe? Any overt Republican help for Joe(that he accepts) will drive votes to Ned and make Lieberman look more like the sorry-ass sore loser that he is.
