I didn't say most couldn't think critically. I think #2 "apathy" and #3 "it doesn't matter what I think" dominate, and perhaps #4 as you suggested, the inability to filter out the noise.

I don't lump "self critical" with critical thinking, btw. I hear many people who (for instance) complain about something they do, but then hear nothing behind the complaint except a wish that they didn't do that.

I think there are a lot of people who think things through but then base their actions on hunches or superstitions, gut feelings, etc. Kind of defeats the purpose. Investing is a good example of that sort of divergence.
