I agree with some of that article. For example I think a lot of the new support for Hezbollah is just rallying together while there is bombs dropping on the country. Some of the support will be durable, but probably not a lot of it, and at the same time, some of the anger and opposition will also be durable.

I also agree that Israel giving up Sheba to either Syria or Lebanon, would be worth it if it produced a durable peace. But I believe if Israel makes that concession now Hezbollah will use it to claim victory. Not everyone will buy it but I don't think it will help the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah. Also while it removes a pretext of Hezbollah it is a false pretext and if they can find or invent one such pretext they can find or invent another.

My problem with the plan is not mainly a matter of principle. As reluctant as I am to reward Hezbollah for their attacks, I'd be willing to do so it things would really work as Macleod thinks they will. I just don't think the plan will work.
