In 1998-1999 I made a fairly large bet (for me, at the time, anyway) on genomics stocks (INCY, NGEN, HYSQ) that yielded 20-30x gains. For instance, I bought HYSQ at $3.69 and sold at $101, $113, $125. I work in the industry so I would say I'm fairly well informed, but I don't think that meaningfully helped my investments. It was mostly a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

I don't expect to see that kind of opportunity again any time soon. It was hardly a "value" investment, though I had some confidence that the science would pay off... for someone... in the long run.
