You can simplify your outlook by examining only larch trees for the quinine conk. There might be some up in the high Cascades near you. Also on the Lolo Trail and all over Western Montana.

Old growth larch have the conks. I'm sure they are pretty scarce now.

They have a rather pleasant smell, I think.
