Hell, when Dick Cheney shot a man in the face they were claiming it'd be good for poll numbers. The press always believes it, and too often Democrats do too. It's true. Remember when Dean was elected chairman of the DNC? That was supposed to be the end of the Democratic Party. Democrats everywhere ran for the hills (most notably Bill Richardson). When Kerry filibustered Alito, that was supposed to be the end of Democratic chances in the midterms. Republicans celebrated. Democrats ran for the hills (most notably Joe Lieberman). When Democrats delayed the reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act, that was going to be the end of the Democratic Party. Republicans celebrated, but Democrats shrugged it off. When Democrats opposed the flag burning and "I hate gays" amendments, that was supposed to be the end of Democratic chances in the midterms. Republicans celebrated. Democrats were reassured when polling confirmed it didn't give Republicans any boost. When Democrats proposed their "change the course" Amendments and letter of unity, that was supposed to be the end of Democratic chances in the midterms. Republicans celebrated. Democrats became even more united. And now that Lamont has won the Democratic primary in Connecticut, that's supposed to be the end of Democratic chances in the midterms. And Democrats are now laughing in the faces of Republicans. The traditional media may breathlessly report the GOP spin (I'm looking at you, Mike Allen), but reality now so thoroughly contradicts the GOP's cookie-cutter spin that even long-abused Democrats are laughing it off. Republicans keep drawing from the same playbook. You can't blame them, it worked like a charm for many years. But now, the polls, the fundraising numbers, the hot issues, they all favor the Democratic Party and its candidates. It's a new political era. And Democrats seem to be, can I say it? -- having fun. I know I am.
