You can destroy the nest in one of two ways, maybe more. You can use brute main force. Step on it. Burn it. Or you can change the environment so that it is lethal to hornets. Fumigate.

We can use brute main military force - direct targetting (ie assassination, regime change, etc), or forcibly change the status quo so that the ME is no longer so hospitable to terrorism. We used brute force against the Taliban and AQ in Afghanistan, and against Iraq. That also changes the center of gravity. A good place to start the fumigation.

If you're looking for WWII, you aren't going to get it. I don't think we'll ever see that kind of warfare again.
