Obviously 'overwhelming force' is a relative term, i.e. you can't know how much until the folks at the other end are 'overwhelmed'. No one on the R side will ever explain how far they would go........ You're learning. It is relative. We didn't need overwhelming force to overthrow Saddam. We needed more soldiers to occupy the country, and we needed to preserve the Iraq army as an institution to prevent Iraqi soldiers from joining the resistance as a means of employment. As for the Israelis, I might concur with Delay (but only grudgingly). But they have 40,000 troops on the border right now, and that represents 10% of their standing army. They held off their offensive on the minimal hope that France will stop playing games over an international force. But it's likely they will move this weekend, as is being reported. Because I don't see France caving in. Chirac is trying to play a grander game by ingratiating himself with the Arab states. Hawk

It's not a Delay original thought or anything. It's the Powell doctrine. It's X number of boots on the ground for Y number of people on the ground. In Iraq that number was around 450,000 or about triple what we had. That's the number I remember from way back when. Mention that number and you get early retirement in the revamped Rumsfeld army. Since we have so few boots on the ground, we keep taking ground and then have to move away to do something else and then come back again....lather,rinse, repeat. It must be endlessly frustrating as well as hugely destructive to the civilian population. The other problem is the permanent bases and embassy we're building. That huge base in the desert is a good sized town and that requires endless convoys to bring in materials. Apparently internet access, big screen tvs, multiple flavors of ice cream, refrigerated dessert cases and silver trays are a necessity for Rummy's fast moving military. Small wonder so many have been killed by IEDs, they're always running around in trucks. Although Rummy supposedly wants a small, high-tech, fast moving force he seems unable to remember that permanency requires a very long supply line. It also requires high usage for the equipment. Our equipment wasn't really made for this kind of damage so we now have a huge bill just to get the military back up to where it was. Small wonder this is costing us $11million/hour with no end in sight. We're not just fighting a 'war' we're building a colonial outpost in a hostile country.
