I DON'T WANT, OR DESIRE, to do any such thing. But I'm also unwilling to ban any such activity, IN SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES, AND ONLY UPON HIGHER POLITICAL AUTHORITY, AND UNDER STRICT SUPERVISION SO AS TO NOT BE PERMANENTLY DISABLING. And it should only be done in circumstances where the interrogator has specific reason to believe the detainee has information that might prevent the loss of life of friendly personnel, or innocent civilians. They laws against torture are FAR MORE RESTRICTIVE THAN CURRENT LAWS AGAINST CHILD ABUSE. Things you might legally do to discipline your child would be considered torture under the current rules. Thus, my view is that if you can legally discipline a child with a specific technique, then you should be able to use the same technique upon a detainee who is an illegal combatant, AND THUS, does not belong to a governmental entity that has signed the Geneva Accords. For example.. if a detainee mouths off, I see nothing wrong with slapping him across the face, or even spanking him. Think about that the next time you spank your children (or see someone else disciplining their's). And before anyone spouts off about the Geneva Convention, remember that it is a MULTI-LATERAL agreement amongst GOVERNMENTS as to how their respective combatants should be treated by another party to the convention (as well as general rules of treating civilians). And the last time I checked, Al Qai'da had not signed the GC, NOR have ever promised to hold their own forces to the convention. Hawk
