Over the period you selected, the number of unemployed statewide rose by 453K. The 293K jobs loss figure for the Defense industry then accounts for about 65 percent of the unemployment situation in California. The effect is probably much larger, perhaps closer to 80 percent or higher, when one considers those peripheral businesses affected by the Defense cutbacks.
