Bridge over River Kwai Comparing wage levels, without comparing productivity levels is meaningless. A FREE employee is not always a bargain. I watch history channel special on this bridge - now in the movie Obi Won (alec guiness) goes crazy and makes nice bridge for slavemasters - but in real life they say these guys did everything they could to slow down progress and be unproductive. If they got TOO unproductive they starve or be killed. Now I know many criminal types - lots of drunks/crack heads/dope fiends - etc etc - yet they are also some of the best construction/landscaping/handymen in the area. I think the crack actually make some of them work much faster than typical worker - before it kills them. I see prison bus everyday out working guys cleaning up the city - how much is difference in skill level and productivity between DUI construction worker in jail for 6 months who is sober - and non incarcerated construction worker who shows up drunk? Does it take a lot of skill to pick up trash and cut grass? That much more to hammer a nail? If you have a good supervisor - even the crappiest of workers can only degrade quality so much eh? I see your point. Perhaps people will never want to work the prisoners to do all kinds of various services. I sure don't see princess in walmart buying all kinds of stuff everyday made by sweatshop slave labor - her morals would eat her up at night if she did that - hehe Has the debate ever been cleared on who built the pyramids - slaves or free men?
