I remember the oil embargo years, when it was deemed far more important to get around than to look good or drive a muscle car. People just weren't that fond of driving to a gas station at 5 am and getting in line, nor paying far more for gas than they used to.

The difference *now* I believe is the easy credit -- the old Visa balance can ratchet up for a lot of months before it really registers on the card holder that it's time to do something different.
