Actually, it could have been much worse for Israel. What if the IDF had actually gone in and then failed. What if, speculation here, the IDF had told the politicos that they couldn't win after all? What if?

This way, the country can save face, blame it on a politico or two, blame it on the UN, blame it on world public opinion, blame it on liberals in the USA and say it could have won if only.....

Israel has showed many of its cards and they don't look as good as people thought. Were they going to resort to nukes? Who knows?

At any rate, this is a way to get out of the corner they've gotten themselves into. I suspect the rightwing and, especially, the Neocon blame game will be raging if this goes through.

Now if only the US can find someone to blame for Iraq....hm.....

=============== An oldie (10 years old) but a goodie. The Neocon agenda: putzing around with millions of lives.

"...King Hussein may have ideas for Israel in bringing its Lebanon problem under control. The predominantly Shia population of southern Lebanon has been tied for centuries to the Shia leadership in Najf, Iraq rather than Iran.

Were the Hashemites to control Iraq, they could use their influence over Najf to help Israel wean the south Lebanese Shia away from Hizballah, Iran, and Syria. Shia retain strong ties to the Hashemites: the Shia venerate foremost the Prophet’s family, the direct descendants of which — and in whose veins the blood of the Prophet flows — is King Hussein...."

Interesting. Who will the new PM be? Peretz of labor has been tarred by the same brush. Bibi is a failed ex-leader. Perhaps Sharon comes out of the coma? BTW for all of the folks who hated Sharon, dont we miss him now? He wouldnt have has to prove himself in a war and probably would have dealt with Hizbolla differently. Hell Hizbolla probably would have feared sharon enough that they wouldnt have attacked in the first place. You should read tom friedman today in the NYT for an alternate take. He says Nazralla will claim victory anyway so Olmert is right to stop now. He talks of the Lebanese coming back to their homes cursing israel but angrily asking hizbolla why they traded the interests of the people of lebanon for those of iran once they see the total devastation of their homes and towns. He goes on to say that whether disarmed or not, hizbolla will have a tough time shooting at israel over the heads of French, Turkish and Italian troops. Politically hizbolla can be brought under control so what today might be perceived as an israeli defeat may be the defeat that saves their arses in the future.
