I think this whole thing in Lebanon makes no sense as it is presented. I think it's all quite bizarre.

If there really is an intention to widen the war into Syria and Iran, is the UN 'diplomacy' just a ruse? If so, why would they want the troops of any other country running around Lebanon? It makes future incursions into the area much riskier.

Considering the situation in Iraq, more training isn't going to help the Israelis in guerilla warfare. This is still a war about ideas (some of the ideas being land) not about military superiority. What everyone needs is more talk, less wild shooting.

OTOH, if this entire thing over the soldiers was actually a mistake from trigger happy generals and weak politicos it would explain more of this strange situation. Considering how badly Iraq has gone, would it be a surprise if another rightwing government showed itself to be incompetent?
