be careful with the earphone, particularly the in-ear type of ear buds ... very bad for hearing over extended time use

I found iPod music quality to be much less than CDs for my taste. I think there is also an alternate higher quality encoding scheme.

iPod quality works good for the car enviroment, however.

I also now have XM satellite radio, also digital, for my wife's car. It is pretty good, but on some songs I caneasily hear "smearing" and some artifacts even while driving.

Relative quality levels

Best, then declining - these should be thought of as ranges with some overlap...

Top ---------------

HD CDs

"regular" CDs

CD note - if the same source material (Joe X plays Vivaldi at Wembly) has two different CD versions ,a regular and a later issue "gold" or "platinum" or "specially remastered" DSP processed version for a higher price....buy the later premium version, because this usually means the first version was messed up, often very badly.

XM satelite
is usually better than
a good cassette deck with good tape

Average cassette deck, slightly mis-alinged, average tape

FM radio broadcast on average radio

iPod

TV sound quality

then way down

AM broadcast

still lower

Short wave broadcast
