Samsung converts 12-inch capacity to NAND flash to meet demand from Apple, say sources

Hans Wu and Esther Lam, DigiTimes.com [Wednesday 9 August 2006]

Although Apple disappointed its fans with not rolling out a new iPod gadget during its recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Samsung Electronics started converting about 4% of its current 12-inch wafer production capacity from DRAM to NAND flash to be ready for upcoming demand from Apple, according to sources at distributors. The process started last month, with converting capacity estimated at 8,000 wafers per month, the sources detailed.

Since the rumored capacity transition implies a 1% drop in the global DRAM supply, media sources expect it may be a reason for DRAM prices to further increase. Moreover, the sources expect that Samsung may later continue capacity transition.

DRAMeXchange indicated that Apple should start resuming its NAND flash procurement from both Samsung and rival Hynix Semiconductor after mid-August.
