Which Klan are you talking about? The original, which was a gentleman's club, complete with silly names for the various titles like "Grand Imperial Dragon"? Or what it evolved into during Reconstruction? Where it was a way to resist the occupiers, help those displaced by the changes brought on by the occupation and to moderate the social upheaval caused by all the newly freed slaves. The latter usually by violence and intimidation of said slaves. The Klan was much lauded during those days in the South. Now post-Reconstruction meant the first two declined in importance and the latter one become their sole function. And it was important, most white Southerners were dirt poor and knew they were near the bottom of the heap. The only thing keeping them from the absolute bottom was the fact that the blacks were below them. So they made sure they stayed there. And that didn't change, except for the periodic race riot, until there was economic development after WWII. With that, it wasn't nearly as important to keep the lid on blacks as before. And then and only then, the Klan started to be marginalized. But even then, it took a while in some places. The poorer the area, the stronger the Klan was. I remember seeing some footage out of the late 1970s. The Communist Worker's Party had staged an ill-advised rally in some city in one of the Carolinas. Greenville, I think. Anyway, part way through the rally, several cars pulled up, Klansmen got out and opened the trunks and proceeded to pull out guns and shooting the protesters. A guy with a movie camera hid under a car and filmed it. The shooting went on for 5 or 10 minutes. The Klansmen then put the guns back in the trunks and drove off. It was only then that the policemen, who were sitting in their cars a block away watching the rally, strolled across the park to see what was happening. The Klan isn't dead yet. They hooked up with the neo-Nazi movement during the 1990s and have been trying to feed people into the military so they can steal better weapons. Until recently, they have had some small successes. That seems to be changing. To meet recruitment goals, the military isn't as diligent in weeding these guys out. No doubt, they are getting better armed...
