Bush-Cheney + Company are on the attack now big-time. Their strategy (we've seen the leaked GOP plan) is to rally 'round Bush-Cheney and Iraq, no matter how damning the evidence that it's been a failed counter-productive exercise based on a lot of false claims and assumptions. That is their plan.

Now, to get anyone to swallow that BS, they are forced to twist the truth and use tried and true far rightwing propaganda techniques which go all the way back to Nazi Germany. That is, if you are not with Bush-Cheney and their "war" you are a coward, traitor, appeaser of terrorism etc. Bushies even try to compare Bush and FDR, and terrorism as Hitler. However, fascism is actually much closer to what Bushies themselves are pushing upon us, starting with cracking down on free speech, the free press, checks and balances, fair elections and civil liberties. The smear campaigns, boogey-man creation and racial/political scape-goating are also huge parts of their efforts. As they were in Nazi Germany and during the McCarthy era in the US.

Speaking of McCarthy. His big lie was this. Anyone who is liberal or cares about the workingclass, civil rights or peace (and today you could add the environment, paying as we go or international cooperation) is a "socialist" and that makes him the same as a "communist" which means he's an "enemy of the state" and a "traitor".

McCarthy and his cronies got away with that total crapola for years and ruined a lot of great Americans lives as a result.
They even banned Frank Sinatra from working for the USO because his mother was a democrat who championed free speech.

Bushies have been trying to bring back McCarthyism (just read Anne Coulter or David Horowitz), using 9-11 as their base "logic". It really harkens back to neo-fascist rightwing extremes during the height of the Cold War which we now all should recognize as un-American. Ironically that's what McCarthy called his victims.

Here again is the Bush-Cheney campaign logic. "If you are not 100% behind the president in his war on terror (regardless of how badly he fails at it), you are with the terrorists and are therefore a traitor, or at least weak, cowardly and foolish".

The problem is, the American democracy is based on free speech and the ability to criticize our politicians. Without that, and especially without fair elections (Bushies have swiped two at least) we become not much better than fascists. In fact, replace the word "Jew" with "liberal" in some of the early Nazi propaganda and it will sound just like Anne Coulter or Sean Hannity.
