If it went about 400-500 years ago, we would (with luck) be seeing it in our life time, since the light -of the explosion- is still on its way to the solar system.

If it is exploding now, it will take 400-500 years to reach our descendants.

But it would be nice to see a big one like this during our lifetime it goes supernova.
