CSFO -

As far as we know.

One predictable piece of fallout from this foiled plot is the Bush camps' attempt to use it to increase fear among the populace. They are once again saying things to equate the war in Iraq with the fight against terrorism. They are making the claim that Democrats who support getting out of Iraq want to stop fighting terrorism.

That is twisted and deceitful.

Even if we accept the assertion that there were some connections between Hussein and terrorists, it is very clear that Iraq was not the main source of support for Al Qaeda, nor even a major one. At best, Iraq's involvement was peripheral. So to put the majority of our terrorism fighting resources to work in Iraq made little sense then. It still makes little sense, since the Iraq war has devolved into many different kinds of conflicts, the main ones being between various factions within Iraq, and with groups who are just trying to get the U.S. out of there.

Meanwhile, we haven't really finished the job in Afghanistan, which was the main base of support for Al Qaeda.
