"Stores, including Home Depot, don't take back custom-mixed colors. "

I've rejected colors mixed right at the store BEFORE I took them home, because they didn't match my sample. Perhaps what I have been buying was some of those? I've had no problem refusing the paint mixed, if it obviously didn't match.

The paint that I buy comes from SOMEWHERE, and every Home Depot I've been in has a shelf full of constantly changing rejected paint. Perhaps you're just too smart for your own good? Why don't you ask and see if they have the discounted paint - or, just continue to pay too much, I could care less.

The Home Depots around here used to take back custom paint but changed their policy last spring due to the rising number of returns. Customers would take the paint home and then change their minds, or maybe they only needed a minute amount. Another scam was to order the paint and then never buy it. Customers would come back in a day and buy it for next to nothing on the discount rack. Home Depot got clever and tinted the paint again to make it no longer match what that customer had wanted. When they changed their policy many stores here had hundreds of cans of custom paint and some slashed the price to $1 per gallon to get rid of it. My wife loves paint and color with a passion so we ended up making the rounds of every HD in the county that month. Her eye for color in hindsight has turned out to be outstanding. As for myself, white throughout was my modus operandi before I met her.

I am very surprised to hear that anyone has had a problem with Home Depot's color matching. The color usually looks different wet but has never failed to be a perfect match when dry, and we have used color matching dozens of times.

FWIW, Behr paint has been rated the number one paint for the past several years. I like it better than any paint I have ever used, including the specialty brands. You still have to do 3 or more total coats with red!
