" First of all, suicide bombing dates at least to the Japanese during WW2, and more modernly, the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka. The Arabs have brought the technique to a new art and are quite effective at it. But bitching about it doesn't do much good. It certainly doesn't stop the suicide bombers. The only reason for the whining and pleading is that you are trying to convince 3rd parties to take up sides in the argument. Taking up sides in somebody else's argument is a good way to get yourself a punch in the nose, or in this case, an attack by a suicide bomber. Suicide bombing is practiced by terrorists mostly because they can't afford, or do not have access to, more effective (and safer for the user) weapons. If you really want to eliminate suicide bombs, a great way to do it would be to supply the terrorists with, oh, I don't know, cruise missiles and helicopters. By the way, when was the last time you heard about an Islamic Fascist use a cruise missile to blow up a building filled with innocent civilians? They just don't seem to do that. I wonder why. Keeping the fight going is very short sighted. Humans are wonderful imitators. Look at what Israel is doing to Lebanon's infrastructure. In the logic of "he hit me back first", that means that the other side is fully justified in doing the same thing to Israel's infrastructure. Sure there is no moral problem because we're right and they're wrong. Anyone can see that, it's as plain as the day is long. The fact that the majority of the world has more sympathy for the Arabs is just evidence that we need that many more weapons to keep the rest of the world in line. But even ignoring the moral gray areas, the practical fact is that the Israelis are more severely outnumbered than any surviving country has ever been. Little countries that fail to be friendly to major power neighbors eventually get stomped. The Arabs are temporarily weakened, but they have the numbers to be a major power (as they once were). Eventually they will be a major power once again. Israel's technological advantages will melt away the same way that Finland's early advantages against the Soviet Union eventually melted away. Instead of arguing about who is right and who is wrong, an argument which the US and Israel HAVE ALREADY LOST 20 YEARS AGO, we would be better served contemplating how we are going to deal with Arab and Moslem states that possess military power equal to that of France or Germany. It is only by dropping the useless morality arguments, and by looking at the situation in the clear light of day, with a concentration on what the situation truly is (it is dire), and what is changing in the situation (it keeps getting worse for Israel), and what is likely to happen in the future (in the war after this one, Israel will have its infrastructure destroyed like Lebanon's) that we can reduce the loss of life in the region and obtain some sort of peace in the region. I believe that I will live to see peace in the Middle East, but I do not believe I will live to see Israel victorious in guaranteeing here safety through strength. Instead, she must find another way. It's not going to be easy. -- Carl
