Re: "anything about oil?"

Exact same topic --- trade is trade. Business is business.

There has been much talk in Congress (in the House of Representatives, for instance, during the debates over extending permission for off-shore drilling) about allowing US oil companies to drill for oil in more US waters off of State's coasts, AND allowing them to drill in Cuban waters just miles off of our coasts --- as NUMEROUS foreign owned companies are beginning to.

There has also been MUCH debate (in fact, it came close to passing in the House last year) for removing the ban on US AGRICULTURAL exports (exports for *cash*...) to Cuba.

If exposing the Soviet Union to the successful economies of the West, (igniting 'consumer desires' in their peoples) helped to show-up the failed economic system that is Communism, and helped to bring about it's fall... then why shouldn't that also help elsewhere?

(Certainly the old policies of 'economic isolation' haven't brought about any of the changes we desire in over 50 years now....)

So, why should we PAY for something that hasn't worked... when we could easily be making money with something that shows more prospects for bringing about Democracy?

(Or, is that successful policy only 'good for' the Soviet Union and China... but for some strange reason, not for small islands? :-)
