Well, smaller than a 2.5 (notebook drive) at least. "Micro" hard drive refers to those drives originated by IBM and now made by other companies that fit into the same space as a compact flash card. The ipod drives were a bit bigger than "micro"

You are correct that the iPod was the first mp3 player to use a micro hard drive.
