The photo shows Castro holding a copy of the August 12 edition of Granma, the Cuban Communist Party newspaper . . . Note the implicit acknowledgement that the Cuban people don't believe anything their government says, absent this sort of "proof."

Yup. The Granma doth evince too much, methinks.

The newspaper in his hands is an acknowledgement people think he's dead and is an obvious effort to dispel that belief. Better would have been to air a videotape with him talking about something current. But you'd need a really good physical and voice double to do that. Which I guess they don't have.

Looks like an old picture of Castro lounging around in his adidas jumpsuit - with a current paper photoshopped in.
