The fires were not in the basement when the buildings collapsed.

The thermal maps and the smoke that could be seen in the pictures clearly indicated that something was burning under the debris pile for a month. That's plenty of time to create furnace like effects in random pockets under the pile.

I doubt the melted metal got that way in the first hour, it was a long smelting process.
