It isn't possible to "barrell it's way down floor by floor" UNLESS THE SUPPORT HAS BEEN TAKEN OUT AHEAD OF THE COLLAPSE

That's like saying the dukes of hazzard couldn't barrel though a fence unless the gate was open.

It's a simple matter of whether the force of 20 or 30 stories of falling building is more than the strength of thenext floor. The floor loses and adds to the mass hitting the next floor.
