"some of the liberals on this thread no longer believe in keeping Israel around."

Israel hasn't been of any objective use to the US since the end of the Cold War, only a draining, runiously costly in MANY ways, liability. I've been saying the same thing for 15 years. We should cut Israel loose. They're perfectly safe with their 200+ nukes, and don't need us anyway.

Supporting Israel made sense when they were OUR client and the Arab states were the Soviet's clients - but not any longer.

Elroy, I don't believe that the problems in the Middle East can be contained. Tossing Israel to the Arabs is perhaps the most effective way to empower the Islamic extremists, for it will prove to them that might makes right and that the West is too weak.

Hence the reason why some have called Israel the front-line in the war on terrorism. (Which, come to think of it, would also explain why some of the liberals on this thread no longer believe in keeping Israel around.)

Once Israel is removed from the equation there is no reason for the "West" to be involved in the so-called War on Terror. The battle of whether Muslims should live by strict sharia law (the fundamentalists view) or in secular fashion (a la Turkey) is a battle between and amongst Muslims, not non-Muslims. We should be just spectators, in the same way we watch whether Switzerland decides to join the EU or not.

The only reason (or at least primary reason) the fundamentalists attack people outside of Muslim lands is Israel and the repurcussions of western support for it. And we wouldn't be tossing Israel to the Arabs, we would be letting people who want to live amongst neighbors that for whatever reason want to kill them fight their own battles. It is their battle, because the Israelis are not in a country which recognizes all men as equal - they are promoting a country which is a homeland for one specific ethnic group. I'm not in that ethnic group, and most of my country is not in that ethnic group, so I don't want to waste my resources or my country's resources fighting for that ethnic group when my country's value tells me all men are equal regardless of ethnic group.

You're Korean American - how much would you support Japreal located where Israel were now, if Japreal were a second home for Japanese who wanted to live in Arabia and didn't want to live in Japan? Any Japanese person on the planet could immigrate to Japreal and become a citizen, but any non-Japanese that wanted to live there would have much difficulty immigrating, because it is a newly created second Japanese home (not for just anybody, it's for the Japanese!!)? Would that country of Japreal be your "front line in the War on Terror" as Japreal resisted Arab attacks, or would you think it not worth American resources when the Japanese already have a place to live in peace and harmongy where their neighbors accept them?

Israel is losing the war in Lebanon; the US is losing the war in Iraq. You need to rethink your theories.
