Are you suggesting the floors would have dropped down the core like a stack of vinel records dropping down the spindle of the record player?

The core was just more beams and a lot of stuff like elevators and stairs. The floors could not have settled neatly over these, they would have broken up and smashed into the core and elevators from the sides at all different angles with terrific force. That would be enough to tear up the core too, since it was designed to withstand vertical loads, not masses of concrete and steel hitting it from the sides.
