Popularity of online video sites gives everyone a chance to be seen

Hawks and others are grabbing their cameras and zooming in on the Internet video frenzy, which is centered on sites such as Google Video and YouTube. Online video watching grew by 18% in six months, comScore Networks reported last March. Research suggests as many as 46% of all Internet users have watched online video in the past month.

According to Nielsen//NetRatings, which tracks traffic online, MSN Video is the largest online video site and experienced a 44% gain in visitors from 2005 to 2006. During the same time period, YouTube and Google Video grew from relative obscurity to 9 million and 6.2 million visitors, respectively, closing in on MSN Video's 9.3 million audience.

The trend is linked to the surging number of households with high-speed broadband access, which allows videos to be viewed without excessive waiting.

A study by the Pew Internet research groups shows that when people have high-speed Internet, they're a lot more likely to spend time on the Web having fun, in addition to e-mailing and reading text.
