You forgot the Battle of Saratoga - esp. important as it convinced the French that the American cause was viable, so they sent a fleet. Benedict Arnold, who was still on the American side at the time, defeated "Gentleman Johny" Burgogne.

Also, Washington's battles at Trenton and Princeton, that kept his army together & fighting.

Yes, Tim, that's why I used qualifying words such as 'basically'. Guerilla style insurgencies often, maybe usually, morph into bona fide military. Hezbollah appears to possibly be in that process itself.

Success of guerrilla insurgencies also, I'm guessing, varies based on the core principles involved. Real or perceived injustice is the typical rallying cry, and I believe is the strongest long-term motivating force.
