Yes, the Israeli public is not at all pleased with Olmert's handling of the war. Look, I'm not saying he did a brilliant job, or even a very competent job. I'm only saying that it looks like Israel won a military victory anyway. But that is never enough for Israel because Nasrallah can claim "victory" because he's still alive and fighting.

The Arabs suffer such an achievement gap that their standards for victory are pathetically low. Israel's standards are exceptionally high. There is such a difference between the standards that Israel can do much worse than expected, and Hezbullah much better than expected, and Hezbullah can still lose handily by any conventional measure. That's all I'm saying.

from debka:

Most Israelis (52%) believe the army operation in Lebanon was not a success; 44% thought it was

August 14, 2006, 9:35 PM (GMT+02:00)

According to a Globes-Smith poll Monday, Aug. 13, 58% thought Israel achieved only a small part or none of its goals (compared with 16% 11 days ago). If elections were held now, both ruling parties - the prime minister’s Kadima and the defense minister’s Labor would plunge to 20 (compared with 29 now) and 12 (compared with 19) out of 120 Knesset seats. Sixty percent of the two parties’ supporters would defect and be floating voters.
