Why didn't it fall then???
It wasn't just the fire, it wasn't just the damage from the airplane. It was the combinaion.

The confusion continued in 1975, several years after the towers had opened, when a sizable fire spread from the 9th to the 19th floor of the north tower. The fire caused buckling of some parts of the trusses on those floors. An engineering firm called in to assess the fire damage concluded that only fire testing and analysis by fire experts could determine if the floor systems were safe.

This site indicates that the floor trusses were affected by the fire.

It appears from the articles that the 1975 fire was primarily spread in the core, and the floor trusses were not a part of the core (They run from the core to the outer walls). When the fire did spread outside the core the trusses were damaged.

Professor Edgar of MIT made a point on a NOVA show. In a fire such as the 1975 fire the heat source is at the edge of the fire and the fuel is consumed as it goes. This lets the sections of the floors and truss heat up in spots and then cool as the fire moves toward other spots. In the WTC fire the entire floor was on fire at once and there was no ability for a truss to cool or for the thermal energy to spread out.
