Israel is surrounded by what can be called "Arab land" (Egypt, Jordan), but there have been plenty of non-Arabs living there for centuries. It's sort of like Amsterdam is surrounded by Dutch people, but a huge percentage of Amsterdam's residents were born outside of Holland. Also, to be fair, I think much of Israel was a desertish wasteland before the Jews came and developed it beginning 100 years ago. Actually, it is fairly accurate. There were roughly 15K Jews who emigrated to Palestine in the 19th century. The total by the end of the century was roughly 50-60K out of a total population of 500K. The vast majority of the rest were Sunni Muslims with a scattering of Shia Muslims, some Druze [another Muslim sect],some Christians and Christian derivatives. Prior to WW II, the Zionists got the failing Ottoman empire to sell them some land. After WW II when it became the British Mandate, they got the Brits to sell them more land. And it was not always done above board. To be frank, the Palestinians were fairly backwards........they were the blacksheep to their Arab cousins.......and it didn't take much maneuvering to screw them. In fact, it was their lack of sophistication that allowed this to happen. In all the time they had occupied the land, they had never established an official nation state. That's partly what allowed the Zionists to get a foothold. Only the South was pure desert.........the middle section of the country is semi desert like LAX was.......the north is actually very fertile with considerable water from the mts......like SFO.
