It's not reliable. Seems generally accepted now that Ashkenazim are descended from Jews who were either brought as slaves by the Romans to Italy or migrated freely during the Roman Empire period and interbred with the European population probably mostly in Italy. Later on the direction would have been more of conversion of Jews to Christianity. Ironic that probably a big fraction of the German population have Middle Eastern genes in part.
