SNC-Lavalin involved in U.S. coal-to-liquid fuel projects ccemag.com DKRW Advanced Fuels of Houston, Texas and the Houston arms of SNC-Lavalin of Montreal have formed an alliance to develop, design and construct several coal-to-liquid fuel projects each valued in excess of a billion dollars. SNC-Lavalin Constructors is to do feasibility studies, front end engineering and design and turnkey engineering procurement construction contractor services for a coal-to-liquid project in Medicine Bow, Wyoming. SNC-Lavalin's contract is with Medicine Bow Fuel & Power, a wholly owned subsidiary of DKRW. Robert Kelly, Executive Officer of DKRW said, "We selected SNC-Lavalin because of its process engineering expertise in gasification and syngas conversion to fuels, its experience in thermal power plants and for its extensive experience with oil sands in northern Alberta from which we expect to learn a great deal about designing and building a facility of this size in a rather remote region of Wyoming." The Wyoming plant will initially make about 11,000 bbl/day of transport diesel and other fuels using high Btu, low sulphur coal from the Carbon Basin Coal Reserve. GE is to provide its coal gasification technology and Rentech is to provide its proprietary Fischer-Tropsch technology for the project. www.snclavalin.com
