I presume your question was asked somewhat tongue in cheek. But, no you do not have to have a degree to do many jobs on a drilling rig. However, there are a growing number of jobs that are dependent on knowing how to use technology and having good technical skills.

The industry has been in a depressed state for most of the time since the early 80's. Which means that we have not brought the number of new people in that are required to replace the guys who started in the 70's.

Enrollment in The petroleum engineering schools dropped significantly and now the oil companies and service companies are paying premium rates for good engineering candidates.
