On the misleading, I don't recall the particulars now but I do recall they were small things, within the range of errors made writing regular columns. I thought his failure there was not to admit he made a mistake when it was apparent he had done so.

But the rap on him is that he's that sort of guy; not good company; not one you wish to have a beer with. A little beyond the normal level of arrogance in academia, which has a rather high quotient to begin with.

He was simply not going to let a lowly public editor catch him in a mistake. So there.

But he's also not going to deliberately lie with his data. Too much to lose in academia if he does.

As for what he sounds like now, not all that different.

When the book that was the collection of his op ed columns came out, I read around in it. I was genuinely amazed at how many times he called it right about the Bush agenda as far back as his earliest columns. Which were, I think in early 2000.
