Firemen were excluded from the site shortly after the collapse, except due to their protests they were allowed on site when remains were found.

There were 50 police and 50 firemen on site at all times by agreement with the union.

(That is down from the several hundred who were hanging around in the first few weeks).

There was smoke & fire for months (which is why iron was smelted in the debris).
