re: However, how will that change when Al Qaeda or their friends start hitting your local grocery store, McDonald's, or Wal-Mart? How safe will you feel then? Will the seeming Israeli overreaction to Islamic attacks be more understandable once Americans experience the daily attacks and suicide bombings that the Israelis experience?

Where is that assumption coming from? Wal-Mart and McDonalds? Come on man, it's not going to happen.

The question that you need to ask yourself is what makes terrorism more likely and what makes it less likely. If we can get energy independent (I know we agree on that) then we can ignore the ME... let them work out their lives like we have, and like everyone should have the opportunity to do.

They hate us because we're fuking with them, and we fuk with them because we need their oil, desperately. Otherwise we care about each other as much as we care about Patagonia.

Alright, John. Conceded then, in terms of the probability of me being affected by terrorism. However, how will that change when Al Qaeda or their friends start hitting your local grocery store, McDonald's, or Wal-Mart? How safe will you feel then? Will the seeming Israeli overreaction to Islamic attacks be more understandable once Americans experience the daily attacks and suicide bombings that the Israelis experience?

That is very unlikely to happen. You give al Qaida power it has yet to demonstrate. It does not have a national treasury from which to draw. It does not have a standing army. It doesn't have a huge depot of weaponry from which to draw. Its our imagination that has all the power.
