I think that the following is simply the elephant whining that the pipsqueak will not play the elephant's game and give him an easy win.

Like I said, that means that anything less than the complete rout of the Six Day War, which not even the Arabs could spin as a victory, will be proclaimed an Arab victory.

In the court of public opinion it seems most lebanese have forgotten who started the war, and who in military terms won the war. They are concentrating on what is the lead story in the NYT which is hizbolla with unlimited funds from iran is leading the reconstruction. It looks to me israel was set up. Now hizbolla claims victory in the battle, reconstructs lebanon and perhaps wins the next election. Once in power do you think it matters whether the lebanese army is on the border or hizbolla? Once in power, do we think power will ever be relinquished thru a subsequent democratic election or would such a result be overturned? Once in power, do you think the international force will remain if the lebanese govt demands their departure? The possibilities for the shiaa crescent may have gone up because of this war, not down.
And will Olmert one day express puzzlement of why the lebanese didnt rid themselves of hizbolla as bush did in todays NYT of expressing wonderment on why the shiaa who we liberated demonstrate for hizbolla and shout death to america. Both the US and Israel, separately have to go back to the drawing board. A reverse Sadat moment may be at hand for israel. Who will be the leader who brings the mountain to Mohammed? And if there is such a leader will such an initiative be the waste of time you think it will be? The odds are long but it may be worth the shot.
