This is not "fanciful". This is mainstream America. I have trouble calling anything so pervasive, and a belief so deeply held, "fanciful". The many many people who believe this believe it as fact. They really DO believe in the literal truth of the Bible. They would (I think) stake their lives on it- as they have trusted their immortal souls to Jesus, who has reformed them, and made them anew when they were born again. This is the deepest and most strongly held of beliefs.
