"The nature of this particular oxidation is unique since aluminum is one of the few readily oxidizable metals which melts before it burns. Thus, when aluminum is heated it melts at 660C, and at a slightly higher temperature, this molten mass of metal begins to burn if an oxygen atmosphere is maintained within the enclosure. This combustion generates a very high temperature (slightly above 3000C), and the molten pool of aluminum takes on a brilliance which is comparable to that of the sun in the heavens."
