It's great to see a rookie get his chance and really rise to the occassion...Now that the Cubs are using more rookies, they are starting to play better baseball...;-)

O'Malley Sparkles In Debut As Cubs Edge Astros

POSTED: 3:50 pm CDT August 16, 2006

Houston, TX -- (Sports Network) - Ryan O'Malley picked up the win in his major league debut, as the Chicago Cubs blanked the Houston Astros, 1-0, to sweep a three-game series at Minute Maid Park.

O'Malley (1-0) was selected from Triple-A Iowa before the game after scheduled starter Rich Hill pitched in relief during Tuesday night's 18-inning marathon win for the Cubs. The 26-year-old left-hander O'Malley pitched eight scoreless innings and scattered five hits despite walking six.

Bob Howry preserved O'Malley's first-career win by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Michael Barrett provided the offense for Chicago with a home run as the Cubs won their fourth straight game. Juan Pierre had three of Chicago's four hits in the victory.

Houston wasted a solid effort from starter Andy Pettitte (11-13), as the veteran lefty allowed one run on four hits in nine innings of work. Pettitte also struck out seven and walked just one.

Willy Taveras extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a bunt single for the Astros, who have lost five straight. Chris Burke had two singles in the loss.

With both pitchers cruising, the Cubs finally took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Barrett. With one out, Barrett drove a 0-2 pitch just over the scoreboard in left field to put the Cubs in front.

Taveras led off the home half of the seventh inning with a bunt single. Burke then reached on a fielder's choice and Lance Berkman then fouled out. O'Malley then got out of the inning as Luke Scott flied out to right.

Craig Biggio singled with two outs in the eighth, but O'Malley continued to stay calm and relaxed and got pinch-hitter Mike Lamb to fly out.

Howry relieved O'Malley in the ninth and notched his fourth save of the season.

Game Notes

O'Malley became the seventh rookie pitcher to start a game for the Cubs this season...Barrett has 14 home runs on the season...The Cubs have hit a home run in 11 straight games...Chicago placed pitcher Scott Eyre on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday...The Astros have been shut out 10 times this season...Scott had a 10-game hitting streak come to an end for Houston.
