For the buildings to collapse the way they did, the core had to be taken out in rapid succession just ahead of the progressing collapse.

Once the side walls began to collapse the core wouldn't have anything to hold up. It might have remained like a giant totem pole, except that there was hundreds of thousands of tons of debris hitting it from all sides and bending and breaking it.
