One American General was German. A History Channel TV show claimed that Howe had been run out of every German military under a cloud of questions about his sexual proclivities. The Hessians were hired by the English. If the Prussians were with the US it would be strange for them to come without being hired. Prussia was one of the strongest Germanic military principalities. Yes the French aided in winning America's freedom from the English, but they were trying to undermine England's strength for their own reasons. England had the best fleet and the most effective far flung empire at the time.
