Two weeks ago I went on a historical adventure with an old friend. He had two Karelian Bear Dogs like this dogbreedinfo.com

The larger and older male dog, Yuri, had been owned by a guy who worked with bears and was trained against his breed to stay quiet around bears. The younger female dog, 'Kota, was the alpha. They both spent a lot of time orbiting our camps hunting for bears. Fortunately, we had no bears in the country.

Anyhow, we left both dogs at Howard Camp, where the one armed general O.O. Howard camped in his pursuit of Chief Joseph's band of 700 Nez Perce who were traversing the Road to the Buffalo to escape to Canada. fs.fed.us

The younger dog was tied up, so we thought the older dog would stay with the her and the people in camp.

We drove to Horseshoe Lake Lookout, a distance of four miles. We spent a half hour or so exploring the interesting rock formations and studying the countryside around the lookout. Just as we turned around to go back, here comes Yuri, the older dog running after us, panting and starting to slow.

We loaded him up and drove back to camp. I set up my tent, and as soon as Yuri saw it, he went inside and went to sleep for the night. The next day I had so much dog hair in my tent I had to shake it out before I could stow it.
