It seems to me that forcing people to have accounts violates libertarian principles from the get go.

I agree but I've always assumed the privatization movement is meant as a step toward that, rather than the end. Better people "own" their own pension plan (social security) than the government "own" it. Then, the movement is toward reducing contributions. But I'm only guessing here. Just glad Bush's attempt failed and looks as if it is going to fail again.
