Iran is footing the bill and supplying the money. TF points out in todays NYT that iran couldnt do this if oil wasnt at $70+. A lever we can use against the free spending persians and the saudis as well could be lower oil prices or the promise therof thru exploration, new fuels and conservation. Friedmans gas tax to get immediate conservation in the system makes more sense now even though it would involved some economic sacrifice in the US. Hizbolla without irans sponsorship may fade quickly. Same for saudi princes and the guys they love to hate in al quaeda. BTW, Rauf has pointed to afganistan/pak border provinces as the place where the British plot mastermind is hiding out. Seems to me that we have been fighting one of the one hand tied behind the back in afganistan. Now casualties are mounting there and Pakistan, though an ally, is very nervous about a major assault on their border. If we are serious about al quaeda, perhaps its time for us to take the gloves off there. There are two more years left of GWB admin. Next govt will be more passive whether dem or rep. Bush is viewed as a failed president anyway so if doing the right thing means using the military in different ways, perhaps so be it.
