Mr Olmert was elected on a platform of withdrawal from some of the West Bank, while tightening Israel's hold on large settlements and the Jordan Valley.

I think they should just pull out of the 95% of the West Bank they promised the Palestinians in 2000 and focus on Lebanon, where the threat seems more pronounced.

Let the Palestinians have their territory, and if they turn into another "Lebanon" as a result, then the Israelis can justify defending themselves as they have in Lebanon.

It will be harder for the Palestinians to claim "victim" status, and Israel can be seen as having made a prudent political choice.

If the Palestinians choose to press land claims to the 1967 borders, they will find they pay a price for it.

In the meantime, they will have to answer to their people as to why they still don't have economic and social progress.

And Israel will still have the economic advantage since most of Palestine still relies upon Israeli electricity and other infrastructure.
